Calls for Impeachment of President Trump by San Francisco Democrats

Democrats in San Francisco are urging for the impeachment of President Trump, accusing him of executing a “coup” against Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

California Senator Scott Wiener, often seen as a likely successor to Nancy Pelosi, has also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Wiener has recently received attention for his progressive policies, such as when Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill making California a “refuge” for transgender kids, and during a Pride Month event where he referred to California children as “our children.”

In a detailed public statement following Maduro’s arrest and extradition to New York facilitated by the Trump administration, Wiener expressed that these actions indicate the president’s focus on “enriching his public donors,” showing a lack of regard for the human or economic impacts of dominating another nation.

“This unlawful coup adds to the ongoing invasions by China in Taiwan and Russia in Ukraine, and invites Netanyahu to intensify the destruction in Gaza and annex the West Bank,” Wiener noted, emphasizing his South Jersey roots.

He suspects the operation against Maduro serves to divert attention from declining approval ratings and recent documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein while essentially seizing oil resources from other nations.

“Trump is a total failure,” Wiener stated. “This reckless move makes the world less safe… It’s evident again that under this administration, there are no rules, laws, or norms, just what serves Trump and his allies at any moment.”

In response, the White House defended its actions against Maduro, asserting they were “lawfully carried out” and backed by a federal arrest warrant.

White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly remarked, “Democrats support indicted drug traffickers, while President Trump stands with victims and families who can find closure through this historic action.”

Supporters of the operation point out the actions of a pro-Maduro court that blocked opposition leader María Colina Machado’s candidacy, despite results showing her deputy won the vote. They push back against claims of “regime change” made by Wiener as well.

“President Trump’s illegal invasion of Venezuela isn’t about drugs or supporting the Venezuelan people or restoring democracy,” Wiener added. “Sure, Maduro is awful, but that’s not the invasion’s real goal. It’s really about oil and Trump’s dwindling support at home.”

While various Democrats have mentioned impeachment and its feasibility, Wiener’s calls seem to stand out the most.

Maryland Representative April McClain Delaney, representing more conservative areas, suggested Democrats should consider impeachment proceedings immediately. She emphasized that Trump acted without Congress’s constitutional authority and made claims about “running” the country.

Representative Maxine Waters from California cited her past calls for impeachment, accusing the President of evading accountability. “Many Democrats are questioning if it’s feasible to pursue another impeachment under the current political climate, and I’m reflecting on that as well,” she stated.

Waters commented on the unprecedented “illegal invasions, the detainment of foreign leaders, and a president claiming powers far beyond constitutional limits,” although she acknowledged some of Trump’s views regarding Maduro’s connections to drug trafficking.

As Wiener prepares for a primary regarded as crucial for the D+36 district, other lesser-known candidates have reportedly filed the necessary paperwork or announced their campaigns, including San Francisco City Councilmember Connie Chung.
