Giants Set to Interview Coaching Candidates

General manager Joe Schoen doesn’t necessarily need to have previous connections to candidates for the Giants’ open head coaching position, but it definitely helps. Reports confirm that the Giants will interview Vance Joseph, the Broncos’ defensive coordinator. Fortunately for Joseph, he won’t have to introduce himself to Schoen.

Another candidate on the Giants’ list is Kevin Stefanski. He was let go by the Browns right after the season ended, and he might be interviewed as early as Wednesday. Additionally, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo—who hails from Staten Island and was part of the Giants’ staff as a defensive assistant in 2018—will also be considered.

Schoen and Joseph have a past; they worked together with the Dolphins in 2016. That was a noteworthy year for Miami, where the team clinched a playoff spot after winning nine of their last 11 games, largely thanks to Joseph’s defense, which allowed only 21 points during that stretch.

Joseph, who is 53, not only has a strong track record as a coordinator but also has experience as a head coach. He faced challenges with a 5-11 record in 2017 and 6-10 in 2018 before being let go. After spending four seasons with the Cardinals, coach Sean Payton brought him back to Denver this year. Under his guidance, the Broncos’ defense has been stellar, contributing to a 14-3 record, securing a No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, and clinching the AFC West title. Joseph’s unit has excelled, ranking second in rushing defense (allowing 85.6 yards per game), third in scoring defense (18.3 points), and leading the league with an impressive 68 sacks.

“We’re going to cast a wide net, and there’s no requirement for candidates to have prior head coaching experience, whether they come from offensive, defensive, or special teams backgrounds, or even college. We aim to find the best leader for our franchise,” Schoen mentioned.

Due to the Broncos having a bye in the first round of the playoffs, Joseph’s interview with the Giants will be virtual and is scheduled to happen between Wednesday and next Monday.

Reports from ESPN indicate that Joseph will also meet with the Cardinals, Raiders, and Titans during his interview process.

Additionally, Anarumo shares a connection with Schoen; the two spent five years working together in Miami.
