Video Released in Brown University Shooting Case
Federal prosecutors have made available a brief video they believe was recorded by the individual responsible for the shooting at Brown University and the murder of an MIT professor in Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office stated that during a federal search on December 18, 2025, investigators found electronic devices containing videos at a storage site associated with Claudio Manuel Neves Valente. Authorities characterized him as a “Portuguese national responsible for a senseless murder.”
The recording, made in Portuguese and later translated into English, shows Neves Valente mentioning that the attack was part of a long-term plan. In one excerpt, he reportedly said, “It’s over. It’s over. It’s been six months, dude. Not six months, six semesters. Oh, I had a little more planned.”
Neves Valente identified Brown University as his target, but didn’t clarify his motivations for shooting the students or killing MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, who was 47. Prosecutors are still probing into the motive behind these attacks.
The shootings occurred on December 13, killing Brown University students Ella Cook, 19, and Mohammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, while injuring nine others. Just two days later, Loureiro was shot in Brookline.
Throughout the footage, Neves Valente appeared unrepentant. He expressed a lack of remorse, asserting, “I’m not going to apologize, because no one has ever sincerely apologized to me in my lifetime.” He dismissed the idea that mental illness played a role in his actions, calling it “all a bullsh*t excuse.” He stated simply, “I’m sane. I’ve always been that way, more or less [sane].”
In his remarks, he also referenced President Donald Trump’s comment about him being “an animal,” acknowledging it while adding, “it’s true.” He described his actions as opportunistic, saying, “This was…a matter of opportunity.”
Documented statements revealed Neves Valente had no compassion for victims, blaming them for the incident and commenting on the ineffectiveness of the response to the shooting, stating, “Because they were kind of stupid.” He seemed indifferent to how people perceive him, stressing he had no interest in fame.
Notably, Neves Valente discussed injuries he sustained during the attacks, mentioning, “As you can see, my eyes are a little weird,” and referring to an injury he sustained involving a “shell” hitting his eye.
Authorities earlier confirmed that Neves Valente had died by suicide two days prior to the discovery of his body in a Salem, New Hampshire storage unit.
Officials assured the public that they do not believe there is an ongoing threat associated with the shooting and will provide further updates as necessary.
