Tony Dungy Reacts to Ravens Firing John Harbaugh
NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy expressed his thoughts after the Baltimore Ravens made the surprising decision to fire coach John Harbaugh. In a recent post on X, Dungy labeled the firing as “incomprehensible.”
“Honestly, I’m shocked by what’s happening in the NFL. John Harbaugh has been with the Ravens for 18 years. Under his leadership, they’ve reached the playoffs 12 times and even secured a Super Bowl victory. In the last four seasons, the team’s records were 10-7, 13-4, 12-5, and then this year, 8-9,” Dungy noted.
He continued, “They’ve made the playoffs three years in a row, and this year, it all came down to a last-minute field goal that their kicker missed. And they fire him???? I can’t wrap my head around it. Best of luck to Baltimore in trying to find someone better.”
Harbaugh’s dismissal followed closely on the heels of a playoff-elimination game where the Ravens lost the AFC North title due to a missed field goal by rookie kicker Tyler Roop. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti commented, “After evaluating the season and the direction of our organization, we decided it was time to find a new head coach. I had to inform John today that he’s being relieved of his duties.” He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, highlighting the tremendous respect he has for Harbaugh both as a coach and as an individual.
In his own statement, Harbaugh reflected on his time with the team, expressing disappointment but also gratitude: “I was hoping for a different kind of message on my last day here. Sure, there’s disappointment, but mostly, I feel appreciation for every moment.”
Harbaugh is now positioned as a leading candidate for several head coaching vacancies, including teams such as the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, and Tennessee Titans. Throughout his tenure with the Ravens, he amassed a record of 180 wins and 113 losses, along with a playoff record of 13-11. Notably, he guided the Ravens to a Super Bowl win during the 2012 season.
With a reputation for performing well in high-pressure situations, Harbaugh has also set a record for the most road playoff wins in NFL history. Despite the recent changes, he’s had only three losing seasons in his 18 years with the team, including the lowest point in 2015 with a 5-11 record.
In fact, he managed to secure double-digit wins in 11 of his 18 seasons, demonstrating a consistent ability to keep the team competitive.
