Tragic Accident Claims Life of Maryland Corrections Officer
A Maryland corrections officer with 20 years of service tragically died in a truck accident shortly after his retirement celebration on New Year’s Eve.
John Raymond Nicholson, who was fondly known as “Big Nick” by his peers, lost control of his 2020 Dodge pickup and crashed into a utility pole around 7:40 p.m. near Crane Highway and Defense Highway, according to Anne Arundel County Police.
At 57 years old, Nicholson had just concluded his final day at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections, where he dedicated a total of 24 years. His colleagues threw him a retirement party filled with joy, capturing moments of him laughing and enjoying time with other retirees.
During the celebration, younger staff playfully handcuffed him and paraded him through the facility, an act meant to honor their beloved colleague.
The department expressed its grief, noting, “Many people don’t get to receive their ‘flowers’ while the scent is still there. Although Mr. Nicholson passed away just hours after his retirement, DOC was able to give Big Nick the flowers he deserved. Mr. MCpl. Nicholson will be missed but will not be forgotten.”
Nicholson held various positions at the facility, ultimately serving at the reception desk, where he was known for greeting visitors with a smile. He achieved the rank of master corporal, a title awarded based on extensive service, and received a bravery award while part of the emergency response team.
His colleagues and friends characterized him as a foundational member of the community. One friend remarked, “Definitely a good soul, full of smiles and laughter. You are one of the best Big Nicks.” Another friend said, “Nick, you were such a sweet person and words cannot express how much you will be missed.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident.
