Nick Reiner, the son of director Rob Reiner, is set to appear in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday, facing serious allegations of stabbing both his parents, Rob and Michelle, to death.
This marks Nick’s second appearance in Los Angeles Superior Court since the tragic discovery of his parents’ bodies in their Brentwood home on December 14.
Nick is being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. If found guilty, he could be facing life in prison or even the death penalty, although the district attorney’s office has yet to confirm if they will seek the latter.
During his first court appearance last month, Nick wore a blue suicide vest but was taken off suicide watch earlier this week.
Rob, aged 78, and Michelle, 70, had attended a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien shortly before the incident. Reports suggest that an argument erupted between Nick and his parents that night, possibly fueled by Nick’s return to drug use despite multiple stints in rehab.
Later that evening, Nick allegedly attacked his parents, resulting in fatal injuries.
He was apprehended hours later, not far from the University of Southern California, about 25 miles from his home.
According to a New York Times report, it was Nick’s sister Romy who discovered the grim scene after checking on their parents when their masseuse did not receive a response at the front door.
Nick is represented by attorney Alan Jackson, known for successfully defending clients in high-profile murder cases.
Given the number of fatalities, Nick could potentially face the death penalty. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom has previously enacted an executive order that halts all capital punishment in the state, complicating matters as he nears the end of his time in office.
