Giants to meet with Mike McCarthy for coaching position as candidate list expands

Giants Set to Interview Coach Mike McCarthy

The New York Giants are moving forward with their coaching search and have scheduled an interview with Mike McCarthy, a Super Bowl-winning coach. Interestingly, this isn’t the only interview they’ve lined up recently.

McCarthy, who previously coached the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, joins a list of known candidates that also includes Kevin Stefanski, Vance Joseph, and Lou Anarumo.

Additionally, the Giants are reportedly considering an interview with John Harbaugh, the former head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, though no meeting has been arranged yet.

Mike McCarthy, 62, has an impressive resume, having led the Packers to a Super Bowl title in the 2010 season. However, he did not coach last season after being let go by the Cowboys following a disappointing performance in 2024.

Throughout his 18-year coaching career, McCarthy has been known for building competitive teams, which is reflected in his 174-112-2 regular season record, along with 12 playoff appearances.

During his last few years with Dallas, he had three seasons with at least 12 wins, but the team decided to part ways after a lackluster 7-10 season. In the playoffs under his guidance, the Cowboys were 1-3, facing early exits, including a notable 48-32 defeat at home against the Packers in 2023.

Reflecting on his time with the Packers, McCarthy’s career began strongly; he won a Super Bowl in his fifth season and consistently kept a winning record in 10 of the first 11 seasons, with streaks including eight consecutive playoff appearances from 2009 to 2016. However, by mid-2018, he found himself released with a 4-7-1 record.

This isn’t McCarthy’s first connection with the Giants; he was considered for their head coaching position in 2020. His offensive coaching style might mesh well with current quarterback Jackson Dart.

The Giants now have three potential candidates on their roster with head coaching experience: McCarthy, Joseph, and Stefanski, perhaps hinting that general manager Joe Schoen is leaning towards proven leadership in this crucial decision.
