Philip Yancey Admits to 8-Year Relationship, Withdraws from Public Life

Philip Yancey Steps Back Amid Affair Confession

Renowned Christian author Philip Yancey revealed on Tuesday that he has admitted to a long-term affair and will be stepping away from his writing, speaking engagements, and social media presence.

The 76-year-old disclosed to Christian Today that the affair spanned eight years. Yancey has been influential in evangelical circles for decades, notably through works like What’s So Great About Grace? (1997) and Jesus I Didn’t Know (1995). He previously served as an editor for Christianity Today and started writing in the 1970s.

Yancey has been married to his wife, Janet, for 55 years.

In his statement, he expressed, “With great shame, I confess that for eight years I had a willfully sinful relationship with a married woman. My actions went against everything I believe about marriage, were completely inconsistent with my faith and my writings, and caused deep pain to her husband and our family. Out of respect for the other family, I will not reveal any further details.”

He continued, “I have confessed my sins before God and my wife, and have committed myself to professional counseling and accountability programs. I have failed morally and spiritually, and I mourn the devastation I have caused. I understand that my actions may disillusion readers who previously trusted my work. Most importantly, my sins have brought dishonor to God. I am filled with remorse and repentance, and I rely solely on God’s mercy and grace.”

Christianity Today also shared a statement from Janet Yancey, who spoke from a place of deep trauma. “I made a sacred and binding marriage vow 55 and a half years ago, and I will not break that promise. I acknowledge that through Jesus, God forgives the sins of the world, including Philip’s. Despite my immense trauma, may God help me to forgive as well. Please pray for us.”

Regarding his future, Philip Yancey stated that he has decided to withdraw from public life. “I am focused on rebuilding trust and repairing our 55-year marriage. Disqualified from Christian ministry, I am retiring from writing, speaking, and social media. Instead, I must live by the teachings I have shared previously. I pray for God’s grace, forgiveness, and healing for those I have hurt, as well as for you.”
