Trump Administration Suspends Funding to California Over Fraud Concerns

The Trump administration has requested California to provide a list of individuals and organizations receiving taxpayer funding, expressing worries that such funds might be improperly allocated to non-citizens.

On Tuesday, it was announced that over $10 billion in funding would be put on hold for five Democratic-led states, including California, following allegations of fraud.

In letters sent to California Governor Gavin Newsom, the Department of Children and Families informed that the Department of Health and Human Services would suspend taxpayer funding for programs like the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF), the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and social services block grants.

The letter urged Newsom to submit “documentation of verified attendance” regarding subsidized child care services, which includes records of child care hours and payment details from providers.

For the TANF program, the administration requested information such as the recipient’s name, address, social security number, and date of birth.

According to Alex J. Adams, Assistant Secretary of the Administration for Children and Families, the concerns are amplified due to recent federal prosecutions and claims that a significant amount of federal funding was misappropriated from the families it was supposed to assist.

Additionally, Adams suggested that California might be illegally providing CCDF benefits to individuals who are not U.S. citizens or lawful residents.

The states impacted will face the loss of more than $7.3 billion in TANF funds, which will be drawn from California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. This also includes nearly $2.4 billion from CCDF and approximately $869 million from social welfare block grants.

President Trump has openly criticized California, making statements that include comparisons of corruption under Governor Newsom to that of Minnesota. He remarked on Truth Social about an ongoing corruption investigation in California.

This funding suspension is happening against the backdrop of a significant welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota, which has led to charges against over 90 individuals, primarily from Minnesota’s sizable Somali community. The alleged fraud, involving several state assistance programs, might be worth over $1 billion, but estimates suggest the total could reach $9 billion.

Comment from Newsom’s office has yet to be received.
