Conan O’Brien Critiques Political Comedy

Comedian Conan O’Brien recently took a jab at fellow comics for their focus on “shouting” about President Donald Trump instead of delivering genuine humor.

During an interview with the Oxford Union, O’Brien was asked about Trump’s impact on comedy. He argued that Trump’s unpredictable speech makes him a challenging figure for satire. O’Brien believes that the relentless criticism of Trump’s comments detracts from comedy itself.

“Some comics go the route of just saying, ‘F. Trump, F. Trump, F. Trump, forget this guy.’ And, honestly, you’ve compromised your biggest asset—humor—in favor of anger,” he stated.

He continued, expressing concern over the current state of comedy: “Some argue, ‘Things are too serious right now. We don’t need jokes.’ But I think comedians should always be funny. We need to find ways to channel our anger creatively. Good art is a powerful weapon against authority. If you’re just yelling, though, you lose your most effective tools.”

O’Brien was hesitant when discussing whether comedians should address political matters, describing it as a “difficult” issue. “I have strong political opinions but don’t necessarily integrate them into my comedy,” he mentioned, noting that many of his creative decisions are often impulsive.

In the interview, he pointed out FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, accusing him of manipulating the system regarding Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension. O’Brien also humorously mocked Trump’s plans for a ballroom, suggesting it might involve tearing down parts of the White House to make space for a new Mar-a-Lago.

Previously, O’Brien criticized Trump for overshadowing the comedy landscape, arguing that modern political humor has become fixated on Trump’s antics instead of focusing on clever, funny material. “I genuinely believe this is his greatest sin. He’s harmed political comedy through his outrageous actions. January 6th is just a small event compared to the overall damage he’s done,” O’Brien concluded.
