Christian Author Philip Yancey Disqualified from Ministry Following Affair
Christian author Philip Yancey, who has been married for over 50 years, recently disclosed to Christianity Today that he has been “disqualified” from ministry after admitting to a long-term affair.
In a candid statement, Yancey did not shy away from discussing the sinful nature of his actions and the effects they’ve had. He expressed, “With great shame, I confess that for eight years I had a sinful affair with a married woman. My actions contradict everything I believe about marriage. They were inconsistent with my faith and writings, causing immense pain to her husband and our families. Out of respect for their privacy, I will not share more details.”
Yancey continued by sharing his feelings of remorse, stating that he has sought forgiveness from God and his wife. He said, “I have committed to professional counseling and accountability. I am mourning the devastation I have caused. I understand my actions might disillusion readers who’ve trusted my work and, most importantly, they’ve dishonored God. I am filled with regret and in need of God’s mercy.”
“I now plan to focus on rebuilding trust and restoring my 55-year marriage,” he added. “With my departure from Christian ministry, I am retiring from writing, speaking, and social media. My time should be spent living by the words I’ve written. I pray for grace and healing for those I’ve hurt, including myself.”
Yancey’s wife, Janet, also released a statement. She expressed her commitment to her marriage vows amidst the turmoil. “I speak from a place of trauma that only those who’ve faced betrayal can understand. Yet, I made a sacred vow 55 years ago, and I will not break that promise. I hope for the strength to forgive, despite the pain I feel. Please pray for us,” she said.
In a more personal reflection, Yancey had shared earlier about his wife’s unwavering support during difficult times. Recalling a life-altering car accident years ago, he noted her determination and selflessness in caring for him even when facing potential challenges herself.
