Shooting of Federal Agent Sparks Major Gang Operation in NYC
The summer shooting death of an off-duty federal Border Patrol agent in a Manhattan park, allegedly by two migrants on scooters, has prompted a significant response from law enforcement. On Thursday, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced a large-scale operation targeting gang members in New York City.
Operation Salvo specifically aimed at the Trinitarios street gang, resulting in the arrest of 54 members. This action followed the tragic incident where a 42-year-old agent was shot and killed on July 19 at Fort Washington Park.
“These individuals, if not for the Biden administration’s loosening of federal immigration laws, wouldn’t have been here,” Noem asserted.
She mentioned that the injured police officer prefers to stay out of the public eye. “He has led a commendable career and deserves privacy, but his life has changed forever due to this horrific crime,” she explained.
Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, the 21-year-old suspected shooter, was wounded during the police response and later taken into custody.
Noem expressed her anger at the gang’s activities and emphasized the importance of the federal operation. “Approximately 60% of those arrested have been sent back to their home countries to face charges,” she reported.
“These arrests involve members of a violent transnational gang known for various crimes, including arms trafficking and drug distribution, alongside their Trinitarios associates,” Noem stated. “Their violent behavior has plagued New York City for some time.”
Details about the indicted gang members have not been publicly released, and while names were withheld from the press conference, photos and some information on four suspects were shared.
The Department of Homeland Security did not provide further comments after the announcement.
Noem indicated that Operation Salvo was just a starting point in the effort against illegal criminal activities under the Trump administration.
President Trump expressed his outrage regarding the incident, commenting on social media about the bravery of the CBP officer who was injured. “An incredible officer was shot, but he fought back valiantly despite his injuries,” he wrote, highlighting the suspect’s previous arrest in April 2023.
Frank Russo, the director of CBP’s New York field office, clarified that the arrested gang members had a loose affiliation with the Trinitarios. He noted that the federal operation was dedicated to the wounded officer.
“A fusillade is what occurs when shots are fired simultaneously, and that’s exactly what our officers faced that night,” Russo said. He described the officer as a hero, stating, “His courage inspires us daily, and we are committed to delivering justice.”
