Historic Night for Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane made a significant mark on his career Thursday night.

In his 19th season in the NHL, Kane became the 50th player ever to score 500 goals during the Red Wings’ 5-1 triumph over the Canucks.

The Buffalo native reached this milestone with an empty-net goal, finding the back of the net with 3:53 remaining in the game. This was one of two goals he scored that night.

Along with his 500th goal, Kane’s performance also boosted his point total to 1,369, placing him just six points short of Mike Modano’s record (1,374) for the most points by an American player.

After the game, Kane reflected, saying, “Honestly, I’m kind of relieved it’s over. Obviously, it still feels really cool.”

During his time with the Blackhawks, Kane became the first American to win the Hart Memorial Trophy after the 2015-16 season, the same year he earned the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer.

As a three-time Stanley Cup champion, he’s on track for a future induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, although he doesn’t seem in a hurry to retire anytime soon.

“I still love the game,” Kane expressed in April 2025, summarizing his passion for hockey. “This is my life. It’s what I think about every day. My preparations, my training, all of it means the world to me. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.”

Kane is currently playing his third season with the Red Wings. The 2007 No. 1 draft pick spent the majority of his career with the Blackhawks, had a brief stint with the Rangers in the 2022-23 season, and has appeared in 19 games with Detroit after being traded.
