Real-life horror story: Man confronted with nearly 600 charges after 100 skulls and skeletons were reportedly discovered in his house

Over 100 Skull and Skeleton Remains Found in Pennsylvania Man’s Home

Authorities have made a shocking discovery in Pennsylvania: over 100 skulls and skeletons in the home of Jonathan Gerlach, a 34-year-old man facing nearly 600 criminal charges.

Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse revealed the charges during a press conference, stating that Gerlach, from Ephrata, has been charged with offenses such as trespassing, abuse of a corpse, and theft—specifically, there are 574 charges against him.

Earlier this week, detectives observing Mount Moriah Cemetery noticed several bones and skulls visible in the back of Gerlach’s car. They witnessed him leaving the cemetery with a bag and a crowbar, leading to his arrest. Upon questioning, he confessed to stealing remains from 30 separate cemeteries.

When police searched his home, they were confronted with even worse conditions. Rouse described the scene as resembling something from a horror movie, expressing sympathy for families affected by these horrifying events. He mentioned the painful uncertainty some might face, wondering if the remains belong to their loved ones.

Investigators are working to understand the reasons behind Gerlach’s collection of human remains. It’s been noted that he was part of a Facebook group dedicated to the sale of human bones and skulls.

The conditions inside his home were particularly disturbing; some remains were found displayed in ways that suggested a macabre intent. Rouse stated that they are currently trying to identify the remains, which will take time due to the sheer number collected.

Gerlach is currently being held at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility with a bail set at $1 million.

This incident has understandably caused distress and sorrow in the community, as highlighted by local officials who remarked on the emotional toll this tragedy takes.
