Lane Kiffin sought a pass interference call on the last play of Ole Miss's defeat

Lane Kiffin, now the LSU head coach, expressed his frustration over a missed pass interference call during Ole Miss’s thrilling but disappointing finish against Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. Considering he just faced off against his former team, perhaps his reaction was a bit biased.

“Pass interference,” Kiffin commented, following up with a post on social media that seemed quite emphatic, adding a hundred-point emoji and multiple exclamation points. He had also previously referred to Ole Miss’ season as “the best in history.”

Kiffin seemed reflective and emotional in his posts, sharing a heartfelt message along with a crying emoji. He appreciated the effort of his players: “Great effort and guts. … I love you all.”

The game took a dramatic turn as Trinidad Chambliss’s last pass intended for DeZone Stribling unfortunately fell incomplete. Defensive back Ethan O’Connor appeared to make contact with Stribling, leading to some controversy over the no-call from referees.

That last-minute opportunity slipped away as the Rebels struggled to respond to Miami’s late lead. Despite Chambliss managing to complete crucial passes to keep the game alive, the referee’s decision ultimately had final say.

ESPN analyst Bill Lemonnier defended the officials’ choice not to call interference, but broadcast commentator Kirk Herbstreit hinted at the long-lasting conversations that would follow among Ole Miss supporters regarding that moment.

“It’s tough to categorize this situation,” commented the new Ole Miss coach, Pete Golding, noting the definite contact as “common” in such games.

In what could be his last game at the collegiate level, Chambliss had thrown a touchdown to DeQuan Wright earlier, giving Ole Miss a brief lead. However, Miami responded with a game-winning drive right before the clock expired.

Chambliss’s chance to extend Ole Miss’s season hung on that final pass, leaving both him and Stribling with a lingering “what if” as the game ended in heartbreak at State Farm Stadium.
