House Democrat shows backing for limiting DHS expenses

Rep. Johnson’s Call for Action on DHS Funding

Rep. Julia Johnson, a Democrat from Texas, recently expressed strong concerns about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She accused the agency of “terrifying Texans” and suggested that Congressional Democrats should consider reducing funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

When asked if Congress should cut DHS funding following a recent mass shooting in Minnesota involving ICE agents, Johnson replied, “Absolutely.” She criticized Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, arguing that there’s been a “lack of ability” to manage the budget effectively.

“She’s highlighting the wrong things,” Johnson stated. “She’s rewarding the wrong thing, and we should absolutely use that to, well, put this agency back in a position to do the people’s job in a constitutional way.”

While Johnson supports targeting DHS funding, it’s worth noting that the political climate might not favor such a move. Currently, with Republicans controlling majorities in both houses, Democrats may find it challenging to enact changes without bipartisan support.

This discussion comes on the heels of a contentious shooting incident in Minneapolis, where an ICE officer shot a driver. DHS has claimed that the officer acted in self-defense, stating the woman was allegedly trying to run over the officer.

DHS characterized the situation, where a crowd interfered with ICE operations and a vehicle was used in a threatening manner, as an act of domestic terrorism. The agency insisted that the ICE officer was defending not only himself but also his colleagues and the public.

Despite Johnson’s appeals, any substantial changes to DHS funding may remain elusive, especially with midterm elections approaching. Republicans are working hard to maintain their slim majorities in both the House and Senate as November draws nearer.
