Indianapolis Colts Remember Randy McMillan

The Indianapolis Colts are grieving the loss of Randy McMillan, a former standout player who passed away at 67.

McMillan was taken in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts. He quickly endeared himself to fans with a remarkable debut performance in the NFL.

In his inaugural game against the New England Patriots in September 1981, McMillan rushed for 146 yards and scored two touchdowns, playing a key role in a 29–28 win for the Baltimore team. This impressive showing earned him the title of NFL Offensive Player of the Week.

Interestingly, the only player in franchise history to surpass McMillan’s touchdown record during their first game is Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk, who had three touchdowns in his debut.

Throughout his rookie year, McMillan didn’t hit the 100-yard rushing mark again. He wrapped up the season with 597 rushing yards and an additional 466 receiving yards, having been part of the Colts as they transitioned from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984.

McMillan remained with the Colts until 1986. Unfortunately, his career was cut short at 28 due to a car accident that injuried his leg. He finished his time in the NFL with a total of 3,876 rushing yards.

Before turning professional, McMillan played college football at Harford University before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh, where he played alongside quarterback Dan Marino. In 1978, he became the leading scorer and rusher in the U.S., a remarkable accomplishment.
