Federal Judge Blocks Trump Administration’s Child Care Funding Cuts

A federal judge temporarily halted the Trump administration’s move to cut subsidies for child care programs in five states, including Minnesota, due to fraud allegations.

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, appointed by President Biden, didn’t decide on the legality of the funding freeze. However, he indicated that the states had met the necessary legal criteria to keep funding at current levels for at least two weeks while discussions are ongoing.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had announced earlier that it would stop funding in five Democratic states, citing concerns over potential fraud.

Programs affected include the Child Care Development Fund, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and the Social Services Block Grant, all aimed at assisting families in need.

Health Department Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill stated that families dependent on these programs should be confident that their resources are being used legally and effectively.

In court documents, states such as California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York contended that the federal government lacks the authority to terminate the funding and argued that this new policy was causing significant operational disruptions.

These states have collectively received over $10 billion in federal support through the program. HHS claimed it has sufficient reasons to suspect that the program may be illegally distributing funds to individuals not authorized to receive them.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is spearheading the lawsuit, described the ruling as a “decisive victory for families whose lives have been disrupted by the regime’s brutality.”

The situation continues to evolve, and Fox News Digital has reached out to HHS for further comments.
