Indiana Hoosiers Dominate Oregon State in Peach Bowl Semifinal

ATLANTA (AP) — Indiana’s flawless run in the College Football Playoff took an impressive turn Friday night during the Peach Bowl semifinals. A commanding defense forced three turnovers in the first half, while Fernando Mendoza threw five touchdown passes, leading the Hoosiers to a decisive 56-22 victory over No. 5 Oregon State.

Now sitting at 15-0, Indiana (ranked No. 1 in the CFP) will face No. 10 Miami in the national championship game on January 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Miami secured their place by defeating Mississippi State 31-27 in Thursday’s Fiesta Bowl semifinal.

Indiana aims to claim the Big Ten’s third consecutive national title, following successes from Ohio State and Michigan in the past two years. The Hoosiers have displayed a strong and balanced approach throughout the entire season, something not easily matched by other teams.

Mendoza and the defense have truly cemented Indiana’s place among the top teams in college football history.

While the championship game will take place in Miami, Mendoza, a Miami native and Heisman Trophy winner, will relish the opportunity to return home. He turned in a near-flawless performance against Oregon, completing 17 of 20 passes and tossing five touchdowns, including two to Elijah Surratt and one to Charlie Becker for 36 yards.

Kaylon Black contributed significantly to the Indiana offense, running for two touchdowns.

Oregon State (13-2, ranked No. 5 in the CFP) struggled, thanks in part to three critical turnovers in the first half and the absence of two key running backs.

Oregon’s offense was limited to just 9 rushing yards on 17 attempts, resulting in a lopsided halftime score of 35-7. Noah Whittington, who led Oregon in rushing, missed the game due to an injury, and Jordon Davison was also sidelined.

Backup running backs struggled to support quarterback Dante Moore, who faced a tough challenge against Indiana’s relentless defense.

The Hoosiers showed their defensive prowess right from the start. On Oregon’s first play, cornerback D’Angelo Pons intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, signaling that it would be a challenging night for Moore and the Oregon offense.

Moore did manage to complete a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jamari Johnson, briefly tying the game. However, the remainder of the half was dominated by Indiana’s explosive defense.

Following Mendoza’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr., a fumble from Moore led directly to another Indiana score from Black, extending their lead. Later, a second fumble from Moore culminated in Mendoza’s first scoring pass to Surratt, pushing the Hoosiers to a 35-7 advantage.

Indiana extended the gap further with Mendoza’s 13-yard pass to EJ Williams Jr.

Oregon finally found the end zone with a 70-yard run from Hill, paving the way for a 2-yard scoring run by Harris.

In the fourth quarter, Indiana’s special teams made a significant impact with a blocked punt by Ndukwe, setting up Mendoza’s second touchdown pass to Surratt.

Completing their undefeated regular season, the Hoosiers are gaining momentum in the College Football Playoff. In a previous matchup in the Rose Bowl quarterfinals, Mendoza threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns, guiding Indiana to a resounding 38-3 victory over Alabama.
