Protests Erupt Following ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

In the wake of violent protests in Minneapolis and other cities, a prominent immigration expert remarked that efforts to portray the deceased activist Renee Nicole Goode as “George Floyd 2.0” are “not gaining traction at all.”

Goode was reportedly shot and killed by ICE agents during a confrontation on Wednesday. The Trump administration stated that the agent acted in self-defense, believing Goode was trying to run him over with her vehicle.

This incident triggered strong reactions from leading Democratic lawmakers, who highlighted it as an instance of excessive violence by the Trump administration.

“In the same area where Renee Good was killed, thousands of Minnesotans braved the cold to protest her death,” Hillary Clinton expressed on X on Thursday.

Clinton emphasized that in response to the administration’s “lawless violence,” unity is crucial. She argued that the current direction of the government is cruel, declaring, “We reject it.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey demanded that ICE remove its presence from the city. This sentiment was echoed by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who also called for the Department of Homeland Security to cease operations there.

As demonstrations spread, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz indicated he was prepared to mobilize the National Guard if necessary, stating, “We have never been at war with the federal government.”

Laura Reese, director at the Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Control Center, commented that public sentiment has shifted significantly since Floyd’s death. She noted a growing skepticism toward mainstream media and an increase in independent journalism.

“This is not 2020 anymore,” Reese remarked, noting that the pandemic, lockdowns, and social unrest had opened many Americans’ eyes. “People are now less inclined to take the mainstream media’s narrative at face value,” she said.

Reese was quick to point out that she suspected leftist groups were attempting to frame this incident as a new iteration of the Floyd situation. Still, she believes this narrative has not successfully resonated with the public.

During a Thursday press briefing, Vice President J.D. Vance noted the shooting officer’s previous traumatic experience—having been dragged by a car six months prior—which might have influenced his reactions during the recent incident.

Despite the protests, Reese claims that left-leaning individuals are misdirecting their frustrations primarily at ICE, neglecting other federal agencies.

“It’s all about ICE,” she expressed. “The left has structured its political foundation around immigration, which is now threatened by enforcement efforts.”

Reese remarked that there are multiple aspects to consider regarding Goode’s actions leading up to her death. Reports suggest that she may have been actively following, harassing, or directing the ICE agents. “It was her choice to resist,” she concluded. “There’s a level of personal accountability that should not be disregarded.”

Highlighting the issue of illegal immigration, Reese stated, “If individuals come here and break the law, they must be held accountable.” She reiterated a call for asserting personal responsibility in these matters, stressing the importance of distinguishing between victims and perpetrators.
