Internal Conflict in Democratic Socialists of America Over New York Race
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is upset with Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for her involvement in New York’s political scene, particularly her endorsement of a candidate in a race that the party does not support. Tlaib’s actions have put her at odds with figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the DSA’s favored candidate for the seat previously held by Mamdani.
In the upcoming special election on February 3, Tlaib is backing Queens candidate Rana Abdelhamid.
Last month, Tlaib traveled to New York City to personally support Abdelhamid, who is 32 years old, raising funds during the visit.
During a fundraiser, Tlaib emphasized the importance of backing Abdelhamid, stating, “We have to tell them she’s not going to sell us out. We need to ensure her election.” She rallied supporters to get involved, saying they shouldn’t leave without signing up to help.
Despite this, the DSA’s New York chapter, including Mamdani, is endorsing Diana Moreno instead of Abdelhamid, highlighting a split within the party since both candidates are DSA members.
One party member remarked, “This is clearly a play on Islamic politics. We cannot welcome Rashida using it against our comrades.” Another lawmaker added that comments from a fellow DSA member like Tlaib are “absolutely unacceptable” and called for her to be held accountable for her decision to fundraise for a rival candidate.
Ocasio-Cortez, who also has a stake in the Queens race, initially didn’t take a side but eventually endorsed Moreno, describing her as a lifelong organizer aware of the challenges faced by working people in Queens.
Moreno, who has Ecuadorian roots and has been active in DSA, was instrumental in electing several socialist representatives during the 2020 state election campaign.
