Lindsey Vonn Wins Second Downhill World Cup in Austria
Lindsey Vonn marked a significant milestone in her comeback by clinching her second Downhill World Cup victory of the season at Altenmarkt Sauchensee in Austria on Saturday.
At 41, Vonn has undergone a knee reconstruction with a titanium implant, yet she showcased her exceptional downhill racing skills as she gears up for her fifth Winter Olympics. The race’s course was shortened, taking less than 67 seconds to finish, but Vonn still managed to reach speeds of 130 km/h (81 mph), making it one of the fastest times for a female athlete this season. Despite the challenging cloudy conditions, she finished 0.37 seconds ahead of Kaisa Vikov Rai.
“I knew what I needed to do to win today,” Vonn reflected. “It was a sprint, so I had to give everything I had and definitely had to take a little bit of a risk.”
Having returned to skiing after a six-year retirement, Vonn believes she may be in the best shape of her career even after partial knee replacement surgery. Each victory extends her record as the oldest race winner in the 60-season history of the World Cup circuit. Saturday’s win marked her 84th career victory and her 45th in downhill events.
With this win, Vonn solidified her lead in the World Cup downhill standings, especially after placing second and third in earlier races. This event was the fourth of nine downhills scheduled for the season. She earned 100 race points and currently leads Emma Eicher of Germany, who placed sixth, by 129 points. Vonn is now aiming for her ninth World Cup downhill season title, a decade after her last victory at Lake Sauchensee.
Vonn expressed confidence in her performance, stating, “I felt like I skated better in super-G this summer. But once we got to the St. Moritz race, everything went really well from the start.”
As she prepares for the Olympic gold medal race in Milan-Cortina, Vonn is reminded of her success during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
