California Mother Pleads Not Guilty to Killing Her Daughter

Ashley Buzzard has entered a not guilty plea regarding the first-degree murder of her 9-year-old daughter, Melody. Authorities reported that they crossed state lines to avoid detection, ultimately leading to the grim discovery of Melody’s body in Utah.

This week, Buzzard appeared in Santa Barbara County Superior Court to set a date for the preliminary hearing in her daughter’s murder case. This came weeks after Melody’s body was found with a gunshot wound to her head in a remote part of Utah—a situation that has left many questioning the circumstances of her death.

Buzzard is facing first-degree murder charges. Melody had been reported missing after they left California on a road trip in October. Her remains were located on December 6 in Wayne County, Utah, with a confirmed cause of death as a gunshot wound.

Additionally, prosecutors filed two sentencing enhancements related to the use of a firearm during the felony and murder itself.

Details Surrounding the Case

Buzzard was arrested on December 23, just days before being indicted. At that time, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office announced that they would pursue a life sentence without parole rather than the death penalty. Buzzard, who is being held without bail, is due back in court for a preliminary hearing expected on January 21.

Outside the courtroom, Melody’s paternal grandmother, Lily Deans, shared her thoughts on Buzzard. Deans, reflecting on their past encounters, expressed confusion about the changes in Buzzard over the years.

“When I met her nine or ten years ago, she wasn’t like this. I don’t know what happened,” Deans remarked, indicating her deep concern for her granddaughter’s welfare.

Background on the Family

Deans recounted the first time her son introduced Buzzard to the family. She described how, initially, Buzzard appeared shy and reserved. However, after that first meeting, Deans noticed a strong connection between her family and Melody, even recalling hosting a joyful baby shower for her.

As Melody’s case drew attention, Deans mentioned her doubts about the possibility of an insanity defense for Buzzard, stating the crime seemed premeditated. Forensic evidence, including ballistics and DNA, suggested that Buzzard acted alone, with no other suspects identified. The murder weapon remains unrecovered, and a motive has yet to be established.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown labeled this case as particularly tragic, highlighting the profound impact of such loss on a community. He called the murder an example of a “calculating, cold-blooded and criminally sophisticated plan.”

“The loss of a child is one of the most profound tragedies any community can endure,” Brown stated, adding that such attacks are particularly devastating when they involve someone who should be protective.
