Minneapolis Mayor Responds to ICE Incident
During a segment on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) expressed his thoughts on the recent shooting of Renee Good by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, stating that anyone who saw the footage could clearly see she was “not a domestic terrorist.”
Host Jake Tapper asked Frey for his reaction to comments made by Secretary Noem, who had mentioned him by name. Frey remarked that her statements were, in his view, “kind of wild and crazy,” suggesting she was insincere. He added that her description of Minneapolis as a “dystopian hellhole” was unfounded, pointing out that there had only been two shootings in the city this year, one involving ICE, and criticized the agency for contributing to unsafe conditions.
Tapper then pressed Frey regarding Noem’s allegation that he and other leaders in Minneapolis had been demonizing ICE agents. He reminded Frey of his earlier remarks describing the actions of the federal officer as a “reckless exercise of power” that led to someone’s death. Frey responded affirmatively, reiterating his belief that the federal officer’s conduct was indeed reckless and that it resulted in a tragic outcome. He reflected on his bias, noting that it was evident to him and others that Good was not a domestic terrorist. He emphasized the need for a neutral and impartial investigation, though expressing doubt about whether such an investigation could be conducted with the common sense required.
