Accusations Against Notre Dame Coach Marcus Freeman
Marcus Freeman, the head coach of Notre Dame, is facing assault allegations brought forth by an assistant wrestling coach from an Indiana high school. This incident reportedly occurred after Freeman’s son, Vinny, participated in a wrestling match earlier this month.
According to reports, the university has strongly denied the claims made by Chris Flieger from New Prairie College, labeling them as “totally baseless.”
A police report was filed, leading to an investigation by local authorities following the event.
It remains uncertain whether any charges will arise from the investigation. Notre Dame released a statement mentioning that “Vinnie Freeman was verbally abused by a local wrestling coach during and after the match.” They indicated that Marcus and Joanna Freeman acted to remove Vinny from the situation, asserting that Coach Freeman had no physical involvement. The university believes the police report and accompanying video evidence will exonerate him and show the accusations are unfounded.
Reports suggest that Freeman, who has been at the helm of Notre Dame since 2021, allegedly had “physical contact” with Flieger while exiting a door into a hallway after the match where Vinny, a senior at Penn High School, lost. It was noted that Flieger began to exchange words with Binney, Freeman, and the Penn wrestling coach as he left the gym.
Moreover, there were claims that Joanna Freeman engaged in a “screaming match” with Flieger, which necessitated police intervention. After these events, the Freemans reportedly chose to decline an invitation related to the match, though such an invitation was not required.
Coincidentally, this news surfaced on the same day NFL Network indicated that NFL teams were largely overlooking Freeman’s dedication to the Fighting Irish for 2026. Reports suggested that Freeman received a contract adjustment—rather than an extension—in light of his commitment. The NFL community still regards him as a top coaching candidate, despite the current situation.
