George Kittle Suffers Potential Achilles Injury
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is likely facing a torn Achilles tendon after being injured during the second quarter of the team’s wild-card matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.
After making a catch, Kittle was tackled and had to be helped off the field. Replays revealed that he immediately grabbed his right ankle, seemingly in pain, as the play unfolded. He attempted to rally his teammates with some clapping while being carted away, which is quite admirable given the situation. It’s tough not to feel for him, especially since many regard him as one of the top tight ends in the league.
This injury poses a significant setback for the 49ers, who are striving to secure a playoff position against the Eagles. A win could have solidified their No. 1 seed, granting them home-field advantage and a bye week, but their recent loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 18 put those plans in jeopardy.
The last time the 49ers faced the Eagles in the playoffs was during the 2022 NFC Championship Game, which was beset with injuries on their side as well.
Quarterback Brock Purdy, for instance, had suffered a UCL tear in his pitching elbow. With backup Josh Johnson also injured, the 49ers were in a tough spot, ultimately leading to a loss that allowed the Eagles to move on to the Super Bowl.
Kittle might not hold the same position as Purdy in terms of visibility, but he is a crucial player for the team. His influence extends beyond just playing; he’s a leader both on and off the field. It’s worth mentioning that he had already missed several games earlier in the season due to a hamstring issue, as well as being sidelined in Week 17 because of an ankle injury sustained the previous week.
If the 49ers do manage to make it to the divisional round, they may have to tackle it without Kittle if his Achilles is indeed torn.
Kittle is now in his ninth NFL season, with impressive stats including 57 catches for 628 yards and seven touchdowns over 11 games. He recently made his fifth straight Pro Bowl appearance and seventh overall in 2025.
