Smithsonian Unveils New Trump Portrait
The Smithsonian Institution revealed a new portrait of former President Donald Trump recently, but notably, much of the accompanying text referring to his two impeachments and the January 6 attack on the Capitol was removed.
These changes were made in response to Trump’s claims that the museum is “woke” and biased. There’s also a looming White House directive that mandates the Smithsonian to submit detailed internal records by January 13, or risk facing funding cuts.
Initially, Trump’s portrait featured him against a black background with his hands clasped. The new display showcases a black-and-white photograph taken by White House photographer Daniel Torok. In this one, Trump is depicted with clenched fists on his desk, gazing directly at the viewer.
“This is the first time the National Portrait Gallery is showcasing iconic photographs from the White House in President Trump’s honor,” said White House Press Secretary Davis Engle. “His unique presence will resonate throughout the gallery.”
Trump’s Critique of Smithsonian
In the past, the placard next to Trump’s portrait mentioned his impeachment on charges of abuse of power and incitement of insurrection, following the Capitol riot. Now, it has been shortened to merely highlight the years he served in office.
As it stands, Trump remains the only president in the gallery without extensive text detailing significant events tied to his administration. Conversely, other presidential portraits, like those of Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, still carry mention of their impeachments.
Potential Changes Ahead
The gallery has indicated it’s reviewing the types of information presented in all Smithsonian exhibits. They may opt for simpler citations that provide basic details like the artist’s name.
An official from the White House commented that this new portrait will remain exhibited until they finalize an official one. Trump recently shared a photo of the new display and expressed his approval via Truth Social.
This alteration of the exhibit coincides with the White House’s initiative to rethink all museum presentations ahead of the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence. Back in August, Trump critiqued the Smithsonian and other museums for promoting a narrative he feels diminishes American achievements, labeling them as “woke.”
