Jennette McCurdy Discusses Past Relationship and Maturity Manipulation

Jennette McCurdy recently opened up about a relationship she had when she was 18, revealing that she dated a man twice her age, which she described as a classic case of grooming.

While promoting her debut film, McCurdy shared insights on age gaps and the “red flags” to look out for. Her film, “Half His Age,” draws inspiration from her own experiences.

Reflecting on her choices, McCurdy noted she felt justified dating older men, influenced by her perception of herself as mature and independent. She remarked, “I was an adult, or at least I thought I was. He was so intelligent; it felt different for both of us.”

She continued, “I remember thinking, ‘Yeah, I’m special.’ I believed I connected better with older people, while younger ones just didn’t get me.” This was during her appearance on the podcast “Call Her Daddy.”

In the conversation, she recounted how her then-boyfriend exploited her feelings of maturity to rationalize their age difference.

“He would say things like, ‘You’re so mature for your age. No one else can understand you like I do.’ Looking back, I realize how naive I was. Honestly, it was embarrassing that he thought using my intelligence was a tactic,” she expressed.

Podcast host Alexandra Cooper agreed, indicating that comments about maturity are a significant red flag. “In the moment, it might not look like a red flag, but society generally understands that if an older man is pointing out a younger woman’s maturity, it’s worth pausing and protecting that young woman,” she asserted.

McCurdy explained how her boyfriend masked the power imbalance by making her feel as if she had control. “He made it seem like my choice was the only one that mattered,” she said.

She elaborated, “If you feel powerless, you might grab at any semblance of power offered. You convince yourself that it’s okay, even if deep down, you know it’s not right.”

In addition to her film, McCurdy is adapting her memoir, “I’m Glad Mom Died,” into a TV series featuring Jennifer Aniston as her mother. The memoir details the trauma she faced during her childhood, especially after the death of her mother, Debra McCurdy, in 2013 due to cancer.

McCurdy’s experiences as a child actress, notably on shows like “iCarly” and “Sam & Cat,” have been a significant part of her journey. She also shared that her mother’s pressures contributed to her struggles with an eating disorder and anxiety.

During her podcast appearance, she recalled an instance when she expressed a desire to stop acting. “I was in the car, and when I mentioned quitting, my mom flipped out. It was typical for her mood to switch instantly. She essentially told me it would break her heart, saying, ‘This is our family’s chance,’” McCurdy reminisced.

Her tales, sometimes humorous yet deeply emotional, reflect the complex relationship she navigated with her mother.
