NBA Trade Prospects: Analyzing Potential Moves
The NBA is fundamentally structured around superstars. If a team has one, every decision they make often revolves around building a successful dynamic around that player. But if a team lacks a superstar, the focus shifts to increasing the chances of landing one.
While superstars on maximum contracts bring undeniable value, their worth can diminish quickly. Take Trae Young for example. He’s been an NBA All-Star for two consecutive years, and at 27, he’s squarely in his prime. Recently, he was traded from the Hawks to the Wizards in return for players like CJ McCollum. Now, with the implications of the second apron in play, signing a star—who isn’t quite a superstar—can spell disaster if the necessary support isn’t there. Organizations are now more inclined to part ways with players, even when the return isn’t what one might expect.
With Young’s departure, it’s worth exploring who the next set of NBA stars might be, their potential trades, and which teams are interested.
Jay Morant, Guard, Memphis Grizzlies
When could he be traded? Possible trade before the 2026 deadline or in summer 2026.
Interested teams? Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors.
Even before last week’s report from Shams Charania about the Grizzlies entertaining offers for Morant, there were already murmurs about his availability. At 26, he should ideally be peaking, yet this season, he’s struggled—partly due to injuries and a new coaching strategy in Memphis. His offensive efficiency has dipped, creating challenges for the Grizzlies when Morant is on the court. The situation feels similar to that of Zion Williamson, suggesting it may take a motivated team to trade for Morant, likely for less than what fans would anticipate. It’s possible this situation could linger as teams reevaluate point guard options and consider his value in the final years of his max contract.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Forward, Milwaukee Bucks
When could he be traded? Summer 2026.
Interested teams? Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder.
The recent buzz around Giannis’s potential trade came directly from him. He mentioned, “There’s never going to be an opportunity for me to come out and say, ‘I want a trade.'” Bucks fans, however, shouldn’t get too excited just yet. The real question lies in whether Giannis will accept the maximum extension Milwaukee offers this summer. If not, it would be reasonable for the Bucks to look for the best deal, particularly given their lack of a solid pathway to the Eastern Conference title in the near future.
It almost feels like Giannis might be repeating the history of past stars who stayed too long without succeeding—like Kevin Garnett in Minnesota or Damian Lillard in Portland. At 31, his prime should be spent contending for titles, not merely participating in the play-in scenario. Giannis has played phenomenally this season, and it would be thrilling to see him competing for championships again. If he doesn’t take the extension, the Bucks may need to trade him or risk losing him in free agency in 2027.
Zion Williamson, Forward, New Orleans Pelicans
When could he be traded? Summer 2026.
Interested teams? Potentially the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets.
Now back in action, Williamson seems to be regaining his form, averaging 23.4 points per game with impressive shooting stats. While he isn’t contributing broadly to other areas just yet, his elite scoring ability still makes him a candidate if the Pelicans decide to move on. He possesses considerable gravity when driving toward the basket and can facilitate plays for teammates effectively. However, he may require a very specific team structure to thrive. Given his injury history, teams might still be interested because they believe in his potential, especially since he’s not guaranteed to earn out the final years of his contract after this season. It will be telling to see how other franchises perceive his future value.
Anthony Davis, Center/Forward, Dallas Mavericks
When could he be traded? 2027 trade deadline or summer 2028.
Interested teams? Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons.
Since Trae Young’s trade, whispers about Davis have picked up. Currently, he’s injured, ruling out any immediate trades. The Mavericks might pivot towards a rebuild strategy while awaiting Kyrie Irving’s return next season, especially with their limited draft picks prior to trades in 2026. It seems the Hawks were eager to pursue him before his injury. Sanctioned for a rebuild in the near future, the Mavs need to consider the potential of extending Davis’s contract wisely before he becomes a free agent.
Michael Porter Jr., Forward, Brooklyn Nets
When could he be traded? Potentially by the 2026 trade deadline or in summer 2026.
Interested teams? Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks.
Though Porter Jr. doesn’t fit the customary definition of a star, he’s elevating his game this season. Under Nets coach Jordi Fernandez, he’s found his rhythm and become an All-Star. The Nets acquiring him previously raised questions, but given his current performance, they might want to make a move before his value fluctuates. Any team would benefit from a skilled 6’10’’ player like him, yet Brooklyn may be hesitant to part ways without acquiring a significant draft pick in return.
Paolo Banchero, Forward, Orlando Magic
When could he be traded? Summer 2027.
Interested teams? Too soon to tell.
This might sound bold, but there are no rumors suggesting that the Magic are considering trading Banchero. However, in the fast-paced world of the NBA, things evolve rapidly. The team has performed better in games without him this season. The synergy between Banchero and Franz Wagner seems lacking, complicating Orlando’s offensive strategies. Banchero’s recent play hasn’t inspired confidence. Should the team fail to progress, they may be inclined to make tough decisions as financial pressures mount.
Karl-Anthony Towns, Center, New York Knicks
When could he be traded? Summers of 2026 or 2027.
Interested teams? Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Toronto Raptors.
The Knicks find themselves under pressure to achieve a deep playoff run this season, and if they fall short again, some core players might be reassessed. Towns is likely among the first to be moved if defensive issues persist beside Jalen Brunson. While Towns has maintained a strong offensive game, with remarkable shooting stats, his hefty contract might play a critical role in potential trades. Given the Knicks’ championship aspirations, trade speculations surrounding Towns could emerge if they don’t meet expectations.
