Scott Weiner in leather responds to anti-Israel protesters, labels Gaza as 'genocide'

California Senator Redefines Stance on Israel’s Actions

California Senator Scott Wiener has faced significant backlash recently and, under pressure, he shifted his position on Israel’s conflict in Gaza, now referring to it as “genocide.” This change was notable during a candidate forum where heated discussions sparked.

In a post shared on X, he stated, “I have condemned Prime Minister Netanyahu and his extremist government and the devastation they have inflicted on Gaza. I’ve avoided calling this genocide previously, but I can’t do that anymore.” His tone reflected a departure from his earlier stance, which had been more reserved.

During the forum, where audience members posed quick questions about Israel’s actions, Wiener was met with audible dissent. Notably, he is Jewish and had previously been a strong advocate for Israel. His opponents, including San Francisco City Supervisor Connie Chan and former council official Saikat Chakrabarti, held signs indicating their support for the idea that Israel’s actions constitute genocide. Wiener, however, navigated the moment without providing a straightforward “yes” or “no” response, suggesting that the issue might be more complicated than what the rapid-fire format allowed for.

His social media address, which included a brief explanatory video, aimed to clarify his perspective on the situation. In his remarks, Wiener acknowledged the deep emotional weight the term “genocide” carries for many in the Jewish community, calling that association “painful and frankly traumatic.” Yet, he insisted that it was crucial to recognize the harsh realities of the conflict.

Outside of his political life, Wiener is well-known in San Francisco’s LGBTQ community. He often celebrates drag culture and is a familiar figure at events like the Folsom Street Fair, where he sports a leather vest and tie.

Additionally, he supports policies advocating for gender-affirming care for minors and has been vocal about federal policies impacting the LGBTQ community. His stance indicates a broader commitment to social justice issues, aiming to elevate voices that are often marginalized.

Overall, Wiener’s evolving position on this contentious issue highlights the complexities involved in political discourse surrounding Israel, reflecting a mix of personal beliefs and broader societal pressures.
