Predictions for NFL head coaching vacancies, featuring the Giants, Browns, and Falcons

Coaching Changes and Opportunities in the NFL

After a week of uncertainty following Black Monday, it seems several NFL teams have initiated head coach changes. Currently, eight teams are on the lookout for new hires as the playoffs progress. As teams get eliminated, more assistant coaches become available, but we already have a sense of which candidates might spark interest. Some former head coaches and assistants are already in discussions, and it won’t be long before teams opt to appoint new leadership.

Among the fired coaches, John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski stand out as top targets for the offseason. Harbaugh is often seen as the most desirable candidate, raising questions about where he might land next.

For Harbaugh, returning to the Ravens—his former team—could be particularly appealing, especially with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson leading the charge. Following the Ravens, the Giants could be next in line, as new quarterback Jackson Dart is showing promise, although concerns about overall roster strength persist.

Baltimore Ravens: Robert Saleh

If the Ravens were to bring in Saleh, they might be banking on significant improvements on defense. His past with the Jets was rocky, but the circumstances there weren’t entirely due to his coaching. Managing the aging stars like Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett is a tough gig.

It’s plausible that the Ravens would also consider Stefanski, but enhancing their offensive performance with players like Jackson and Derrick Henry seems to be a priority. They’ll need to choose the right offensive coordinator, too. If Mike McDaniel is available to work with Jackson, that could be a great match, though whoever they choose has to be the right fit.

New York Giants: John Harbaugh

Harbaugh will likely have the luxury of choosing his next team come 2026, depending on his personal preferences and financial incentives. If it were up to me, the Giants appear to be in a better position than some others. The Falcons have talent but face the persistent task of finding a reliable quarterback. If Harbaugh believes that Dart can lead them to success, I could see the Giants making a move for him.

Atlanta Falcons: Kevin Stefanski

The Falcons are in a tricky situation; securing a solid quarterback early on could determine the success of the team. However, they boast impressive offensive playmakers like Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts. Stefanski has dealt with a variety of quarterbacks in the past and has proven he can get decent performances out of them.

There’s a lingering reputation from his time with the Browns, but he has a knack for turning challenging scenarios into positive outcomes. The issues surrounding Deshaun Watson were quite complicated, and no team would have emerged unscathed from that mess.

Miami Dolphins: Jesse Minter

Miami’s warm weather might make the Dolphins an attractive opportunity for aspiring coaches, but it’s not just about the climate. Speculation suggests Harbaugh could find himself in Miami due to his connections, though it’s likely this is a role he might decline. Mike McDaniel may be relieved to leave Tua Tagovailoa’s contract behind, but young coaches who are eager to prove themselves might see value in this opportunity.

Minter is gaining traction among several teams, and if Harbaugh or Stefanski aren’t hired, he could be the candidate to watch. The Dolphins have enjoyed some offensive success but have struggled defensively. A shift towards strengthening their defense seems probable, especially with Minter’s proven track record at various levels of coaching.

Cleveland Browns: Jim Schwartz

The Browns have shown strong interest in Harbaugh, who has local ties. His hiring here wouldn’t be surprising, yet there are limitations, especially regarding the team’s salary cap and quarterback situation.

While there may be more appealing options than Schwartz, he seems like a safe choice who could satisfy key defensive players. At this point, turning the offense around might be challenging for any rookie head coach, but a competent offensive coordinator could still make a difference. Schwartz’s experience could be valuable for both their defensive and transitional efforts.

Arizona Cardinals: Vance Joseph

Despite possessing offensive talent, the Cardinals are in a difficult spot. There’s been progress with Kyler Murray’s contract, yet Jacoby Brissett performed better during his time stepping in. The overall situation is tough, especially with a fierce NFC West division. A new quarterback might be essential, along with a serious upgrade on defense.

Joseph might not be an instant solution, but he could enhance the defense quicker than others. His experience could be essential for creating a more stable environment for the players. Hopefully, with new guidance, the Cardinals can restructure their offense and find a path forward with their skilled players.

Tennessee Titans: Clint Kubiak

The Titans might have one of the weaker rosters out there, though Cam Ward shows potential. They would benefit from a fresh, young offensive strategy since many seasoned head coaches likely wouldn’t want to tackle such a rebuilding project.

Kubiak has shown an ability to elevate quarterback play, which is, admittedly, exciting. Among younger assistants, he has a knack for generating offensive energy where there previously was none.

Las Vegas Raiders: Brian Flores

Is Flores a welcome figure in the NFL’s coaching circles? Maybe not, but he’s managed to break certain norms, particularly with the Raiders. He has demonstrated a capacity for crafting effective defenses that apply pressure on quarterbacks. More than just a coach, he could be considered a “culture setter,” maintaining discipline while respect remains intact. For a team like Las Vegas that needs a fresh start, Flores could be an excellent choice to usher in change.
