Giannis Antetokounmpo Requests LeBron James’ Jersey After Matchup

While LeBron James has not yet confirmed his retirement plans, Giannis Antetokounmpo wanted to seize the moment. Following the Milwaukee Bucks’ 105-101 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, Antetokounmpo approached James with a request for his jersey.

“You never know. This might be our last matchup,” Antetokounmpo remarked. This game marked the first time they had faced each other in the regular season since 2022. With rumors circulating that James may retire after this season or the next, Antetokounmpo was eager to honor his idol.

It’s curious how fans and players remain in limbo regarding James’ retirement announcement. It seems strange to think that the first NBA player to play 23 seasons wouldn’t want to have some sort of farewell tour to bid farewell to one of the legends of the game.

Still, those close to James are asserting that a decision hasn’t been made yet regarding this being his last season, leaving open the chance there won’t be any farewell tour at all.

Reactions to retirements among the league’s stars have varied widely. For instance, Kobe Bryant publicly announced his retirement intentions in 2015 and later received heartfelt tributes during his last season, while Tim Duncan simply waved goodbye after his final game without any prior announcement.

One thing is clear: James has indicated that his time in the league is limited. After an intense 48 minutes on the floor, Antetokounmpo found himself admiring the iconic player. He even revealed his autographed jersey during a press conference, showing his appreciation.

“I think he’s a blueprint for all athletes, not just basketball players,” Antetokounmpo said. “He’s been consistent for 23 years. It’s achievable to be a winner and lead by example. It’s incredible. I always want to compete with great players; I won’t take that for granted.”

Yet, on the court, Antetokounmpo displayed little deference. In a thrilling fourth quarter, James scored 13 points, turning the game around and leading the Lakers to a potential 14th straight win, even taking the lead after a steal and layup.

However, Antetokounmpo had his own brilliant moments defensively, contributing to what many consider the Bucks’ most significant victory of the season. With under a minute left and the score tied, he blocked James’ layup attempt and later stole the ball from him, which ultimately helped the Bucks secure their win.

“I couldn’t stand against him,” Antetokounmpo said of James. “It really brings out the best in me as a player.”

In the matchup, James led the Lakers with 26 points, adding 10 assists, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals, while Antetokounmpo had 21 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two blocks as the Bucks continued to improve after recovering from a previous injury setback.

“At this point in my career, it’s amazing to play against these elite players,” James stated. “Giannis, Steph, KD—these are guys I’ve been up against for years.”

For Antetokounmpo, the respect for James continues to grow as time passes. “I have the utmost respect for what he’s done over his 23-year career,” he concluded. “It’s my 13th year now, and I truly grasp the difficulty in maintaining consistency. It’s not a simple journey, and I can only imagine how challenging it’s been for him.”
