Giants set up meeting with Lou Anarumo as coach search intensifies

Lou Anarumo to Interview for Giants Coaching Position

Lou Anarumo, currently the defensive coordinator for the Colts, is set to have a virtual interview on Tuesday for the head coaching job with the Giants, as confirmed by the Post. It’s worth noting that he’s quite familiar with the Giants’ facility, so he won’t be needing directions if the process advances.

On the same day, the Giants will also meet with former Cowboys and Packers head coach Mike McCarthy for an in-person interview.

Anarumo has a background with the Giants, having served as the defensive backs coach before moving up to his current role with the Colts. He has ties to general manager Joe Schoen, as they both were connected during their time with the Dolphins. This history probably plays a part in why he’s considered a strong candidate.

Interestingly, Anarumo’s son, Louie, is currently a professional scout for the Giants, further solidifying the family connection to the organization.

When head coach Brian Daboll was dismissed, Anarumo quickly emerged as a potential favorite for the position. There’s also a link via their shared agent, Bob Lamont, which could be influencing the dynamics here.

While the Colts were once in the running for a top playoff seed, a season-ending injury to quarterback Daniel Jones caused a significant downturn, leading to seven consecutive losses and a failure to make the playoffs.

Last season, Anarumo’s defense showed promising results, ranking second in rushing yards allowed per carry. This stands out as a crucial improvement area for the Giants, who were at the bottom in that regard. However, his unit also ranked 21st in points allowed and 23rd in total yards surrendered, which highlights some areas in need of development.

It’s important to note that coaches from active teams won’t be able to conduct in-person interviews until January 19, even if their seasons have ended. Anarumo previously interviewed for the Titans’ opening last week, and it will be intriguing to see if he might be considered again by the Cardinals, where he was a close second the last time they had a vacancy.
