Fans Criticize Tony Romo's 'Strange' and 'Messy' Performance During Bills-Jags Playoff Game

Tony Romo Faces Backlash for Commentary during AFC Wild-Card Game

It seems Tony Romo’s standing as a fan favorite among NFL broadcasters may have taken a hit. Viewers had a field day criticizing the former Cowboy and CBS analyst for his odd noises and comments during Sunday’s AFC wild-card matchup between the Bills and the Jaguars.

The criticism kicked off early when Romo cleared his throat after a near-blocked punt but didn’t provide further commentary. He essentially left the explaining to commentator Jim Nantz.

One viewer voiced frustration on social media, saying, “He’s so annoying to listen to. It’s the first game of the day, and I have to watch it on mute.” Another added, “Tony Romo is tough to listen to! He makes the game less enjoyable!”

As the game progressed, things didn’t improve. Late in the action, after the Jaguars secured a first down, Romo emitted a peculiar laugh. Following that, he made jokes about a crucial play, which seemed out of place in such a high-stakes situation.

Romo, leading the CBS NFL broadcast team, is far from inexperienced; he’s been in the booth for almost a decade. Analysts are expected to deliver in-depth insights, especially during playoff games, rather than focus on trivial remarks. For instance, he quipped, “Don’t touch my baby!” when discussing a major play. But what about the Jags’ defense sleeping at the wheel? Shouldn’t we have talked about the alleged penalty against Allen with his offensive line getting him moving?

In what some say was his most baffling statement, Romo claimed that the winner of the game had a “real chance” to go to the Super Bowl. He stated, “If we win this, we have a chance to go to the Super Bowl, Jim.” Well, yes, that’s typically how the playoffs function. His take drew laughs and ridicule online.

One user responded sarcastically, “No way, Sherlock. They’re in.” Another chimed in, pointing out how obvious his comments were about playoff dynamics.

Romo was initially very well received when he transitioned to broadcasting in 2017. He surprised audiences by predicting plays with impressive accuracy, showcasing insight that many believed only a seasoned pro could offer. Yet now, many observers feel he’s either become disengaged or simply lazy, and it’s clear from viewers’ comments that people are taking notice.
