House GOP Calls for Hearing After ICE Shooting Incident
House Republicans are requesting a congressional hearing following the shooting death of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis last week.
Rep. Michael Baumgartner (R-Wash.) shared his thoughts with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the need for the public to understand what transpired. He mentioned, “We need to make sure the public understands and fully explains what happened.” Baumgartner is part of the House Judiciary Committee, which works alongside the House Homeland Security Committee to oversee ICE.
While advising caution against premature conclusions regarding the shooting, he stated, “For federal employees, being able to do your job without disturbing people is critical to everyone’s safety.” He expressed his concern, saying, “You never want to see someone killed.” It’s common for people to attach their political views to such incidents, and he hopes the facts surrounding this case will be clarified.
Renee Nicole Good, aged 37, was shot by ICE agents while seated in her car last Wednesday. Video footage reveals her vehicle colliding with the officer who shot her, leading to varied interpretations—whether she intended to thwart the agent, used her car aggressively, or was merely attempting to flee.
Officials from the federal government, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have defended the officer’s actions as defensive, suggesting that Good actively interfered with ICE’s operations in cities governed by Democrats.
Democratic leaders like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have criticized ICE and Republican leaders for stoking fear within the community. They are urging the federal government to cease its activities in the area immediately.
Baumgartner remarked on the different narratives emerging from activists and political figures, wanting to clarify before conclusions were drawn. He also condemned the inflammatory rhetoric used by Democrats regarding ICE, particularly in light of last week’s Judiciary Committee hearing.
The shooting incident has further escalated existing tensions in areas where ICE operates, particularly in predominantly Democrat-led cities that do not collaborate with federal immigration enforcement.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted regarding the event. He noted that video evidence suggested Good may have been “weaponizing” her vehicle and attributed the divisive rhetoric against ICE to the incident’s aftermath. Johnson urged the residents of Minneapolis to stay calm, stating that “We need law enforcement to do their jobs, and this is a terrible situation.”
