State Department Cautions UK About Possible Ban on Elon Musk's X

U.S. Condemnation of Potential U.K. Ban on Social Media Platform X

A high-ranking official from the State Department has implied that the U.S. might consider retaliatory measures if the U.K. follows through with its plan to ban Elon Musk’s social media platform, X.

Sarah B. Rogers, the undersecretary for public diplomacy, described the idea of the ban as “unthinkable” during a recent interview on GB News, which was broadcast in the U.K. early Tuesday morning.

Rogers, appointed by former President Donald Trump, highlighted the issue as a matter of free speech. She suggested that from the American viewpoint, all options would remain on the table to safeguard freedom of expression. However, she indicated it would be prudent to wait and see how the British government decides to act before determining the U.S.’s response.

This potential ban stems from concerns over Elon Musk’s Grok AI, which has been reported to generate sexualized images of women and children reminiscent of AI deepfake sites and share them on the X platform. Grok has reportedly produced explicit images even when individuals have specifically requested that their photos not be altered. After the backlash, the chatbot “apologized” for its actions, attributing the issue to “poor security measures.”

The focus of the controversy is an ongoing investigation by Ofcom, the U.K. communications regulator. Ofcom, under the Online Safety Act initiated by the Conservative government, has the authority to fine social media companies up to £18 million or impose a ban entirely. The agency is investigating whether Musk’s X platform is adhering to its responsibilities to protect the British public from illegal content, following alarming reports about the Grok-generated images.

A spokesperson from the regulatory body stated, “Reports that Grok is being used to create and share illegal, non-consensual intimate images and child sexual abuse material on X are deeply disturbing. Platforms must ensure the British public is shielded from content that is illegal in the U.K., and we will not hesitate to investigate any company we believe is neglecting this duty, especially when children’s safety is at risk.”

This growing diplomatic dispute has also caught the attention of U.S. lawmakers. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) recently announced that she is crafting legislation aimed at imposing sanctions on the U.K. should British authorities enforce the ban on X. This response signals increasing political backing for the platform within specific sectors of the U.S. government.

In her interview, Rogers criticized the British government for allegedly trying to control public discourse and mute political perspectives it finds disagreeable. She framed the entire situation as fundamentally political, asserting that the British authorities have objections to the political leanings of X, which could be driving the proposed regulatory actions.
