Former Chicago Mayor Faces Credit Card Lawsuit

Lori Lightfoot, the former mayor of Chicago, is facing legal troubles related to her finances, with a lawsuit filed against her for over $11,000 in unpaid credit card payments.

The 63-year-old Lightfoot, Chicago’s first mayor not reelected in 40 years in 2023, was notified by JPMorgan Chase Bank about the delinquent payments concerning her $900,000 home. This information comes from a complaint obtained by the press, revealing that she has failed to pay around $11,078 in credit card bills.

As part of the complaint, it appears Lightfoot’s last payment was a substantial $5,000 in August, yet she delayed disputing the final statement until the bank effectively wrote off the debt in March.

The reports indicate that despite Lightfoot’s impressive earnings—$971,626 between 2014 and 2017 at Mayer Brown and a hefty $216,000 salary during her mayoral term—she has struggled to manage her finances properly. In fact, she reported an adjusted gross income of $402,414 in 2021 but opted to withdraw $210,000 early from her retirement savings to bolster her mayoral paycheck.

In the aftermath of her challenging tenure, Lightfoot has taken up roles as a visiting professor at notable institutions such as the University of Michigan and Harvard. Recently, she also initiated the ICE Accountability Project, a platform to document interactions between residents and immigration enforcement agents, funded by undisclosed private donors.

During her leadership, Lightfoot faced significant criticism as crime rates soared in Chicago, notably affecting areas like the upscale Miracle Mile. Additionally, she stirred controversy with her remarks about the lack of diversity in Chicago media, stating that she would conduct interviews exclusively with minority journalists.
