Curtis Sliwa Considers Another Mayoral Run

This is Curtis Sliwa’s third attempt at the mayoral position.

The former Republican mayoral candidate from New York City is actively pondering another run for mayor. Interestingly, he shared this news while visiting California last week.

Sliwa was addressing a group of students at Stanford University on May 22 when he was asked if he might run again. “I was discussing the risks of artificial intelligence, and several students, who followed last year’s campaign closely, encouraged me to consider it,” he recalled.

In response to their inquiry, he said, “Of course I’ll take that into consideration.” He expressed a clear desire to run again, mentioning other candidates, including Zoran Mandani.

When pressed further about his intentions, Sliwa clarified, “We’re still in the early stages of this, but if you ask me whether I’d run again, absolutely.” He was quite candid about why he might want to pursue this path again.

“No one knows New York City better—the streets, subways, public safety, quality of life, and issues surrounding homelessness and mental health,” he asserted.

Now 72, Sliwa plans to seek the Republican nomination once more and seems unbothered by past tensions with elements of his own party, even after alleged disputes over campaign funds with staff.

He has raised $6.87 million for the upcoming 2025 race, coupled with the potential for $5.3 million in public matching funds, although his current campaign debt stands at about $323,887, according to January filings.

Sliwa only garnered 7% of the vote in the last election—a considerable gap from Mandani and Andrew Cuomo, who also ran independently after losing the Democratic nomination.

Despite the difficult campaign, he noted he has no regrets about staying in the race. “I can’t believe I considered dropping out,” he said. “Let the people decide.”

Looking ahead, Sliwa also criticized Mandani’s performance in office so far and expressed a hope to gain cross-party support by 2029.

However, some, like Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkoff, cast doubt on the feasibility of Sliwa’s ambitions, quipping that he might have just as good a chance of becoming “King of Prussia.”
