Hospital Contract Negotiations in Chattanooga
Chattanooga, Tennessee — It seems that a major hospital in the Chattanooga area is in the midst of contract negotiations with a significant health insurance provider.
On Tuesday, we’ll explore how these negotiations unfold and, unfortunately, how they can lead to patients losing their necessary insurance coverage.
Common Spirit Memorial Hospital, previously known as CHI Memorial, has announced it’s currently negotiating with Cigna Healthcare.
The deadline for these updates is fast approaching.
This isn’t the first time Common Spirit has been in a similar situation; it was involved in negotiations with BlueCross BlueShield almost two years ago.
In early December last year, Bradley Medical Center and United Healthcare also failed to reach an agreement.
Isaiah Knox from Knox Insurance Advisor comments that…
“Costs are rising faster than wages. Hospitals are under pressure. Insurance networks are shrinking and patients are being asked to pay more out of pocket than ever before.”
As the contract with Cigna Healthcare expires, Common Spirit Memorial may find itself following the path of several other hospitals in the area and terminate its agreement with the insurance company.
Bradley Medical Center had a similar experience with United Healthcare last year but was unable to finalize an agreement.
According to Knox, three main factors are at play in these negotiations: price, volume, and risk.
“Hospitals want higher reimbursement for services. Insurance companies want lower costs and premiums to prevent increases.”
Common Spirit Memorial maintains it’s engaged in good faith talks, striving to ensure quality healthcare for residents.
“We are actively negotiating in good faith with Cigna to secure patient access to Memorial Hospital, physicians, and top healthcare providers who deliver high-quality care.”
However, Cigna Healthcare contends that the proposed rate increases from Common Spirit would negatively impact their customers, stating…
“Memorial Hospital is already one of the most expensive hospitals in the greater Chattanooga area, and now the hospital is asking for a rate increase, which will lead to higher costs for our customers and their families.”
Tennessee Insurance Advisor Aaron Dixon pointed out that while ACA premiums have offered some protection in the past, the current situation may change as the expiration date looms.
“This has stripped many individuals of their health insurance and resulted in significant premium increases.”
Dixon emphasizes that it’s up to lawmakers to keep ACA premiums manageable.
“We’ll just have to wait and see. I know the Senate is also working on its own legislation to extend these credits, so I’m hopeful that we can reach a bipartisan agreement to make it happen.”
The hospital indicates that the current contract will conclude at the end of January.
The House has passed a three-year extension of ACA subsidies, but it still needs to be approved by the Senate and the president.
