Rep. Neil Dunn to Leave Congress After Five Terms

Florida Republican Representative Neil Dunn announced on Tuesday that he will not seek reelection after serving five terms in Congress.

“I look forward to passing the torch to the new conservative leadership and returning to Panama City to spend more time with my family and beloved grandchildren,” Dunn, a physician and former Army surgeon, stated.

“It’s been my honor to advocate for policies that lower taxes, safeguard our military and veterans, support unborn children, foster medical innovation, empower Americans over bureaucracy, and confront threats from adversaries like China and Russia,” he expressed.

Dunn also conveyed gratitude, saying, “We are deeply grateful for your trust, support, and prayers through the years. America remains the greatest nation on earth, and with God’s blessing, our best days lie ahead.”

As of mid-January, 49 members of the House, including 22 Democrats and 27 Republicans, have declared they will not run for reelection in the upcoming 2026 cycle, according to the U.S. House of Representatives Press Gallery “Victim List.”

Some lawmakers are retiring, while others are setting their sights on higher offices, like the Senate or governor positions.

For instance, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) is vying for the governorship of South Carolina, whereas Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California) is pursuing the governorship of California. Additionally, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) is in the race for Texas attorney general, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is aiming for a Senate seat against incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.

Currently, Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House following the resignation of former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) in January and the death of Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-California) that same week.

A special election to fill Greene’s vacated seat is set for March 10.

President Donald Trump shared his expectations during a House Republican retreat at the Kennedy Center, expressing confidence in the party achieving an “epic midterm victory.” He warned, “They say if you win the presidency, you lose the midterm elections. We have to win the midterm elections… If we don’t win… they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll be impeached.”
