Suspect in Ohio Double Murder Arrested in Chicago
CHICAGO — The Chicago apartment of Michael McKee, a man arrested in connection with a double murder, was under police surveillance for several hours following his arrest.
McKee is accused of shooting and killing dentists Spencer Tepe, 37, and Monique Tepe, 39, in their Columbus, Ohio home. Court records reveal that McKee is Monique’s ex-husband.
At the time of his arrest, McKee was residing in a high-rise building on Chicago’s Near North Side. Footage showed officers stationed outside his 12th-floor apartment shortly after his arrest.
A long-time resident of the building expressed surprise upon discovering McKee lived nearby. Geralind Kolarik, 72, noted, “I talked to him at the pool. There was nothing that seemed particularly abnormal.”
After recognizing McKee from a news report, Kolarik posted a video of police activity outside his apartment and later watched as they removed boxes and clothing from the unit.
“Then I saw the door open, and I saw the officers take out packages and clothes and put them in boxes,” she shared.
Additionally, Kolarik noticed evidence trucks from the Columbus police at the apartment complex. However, officials have not disclosed any details regarding the evidence they may have collected.
Residents of The Pierre, the luxury apartment building where McKee resided since the late 1920s, expressed their disbelief over the police presence. “You never expect something like this to be happening right next door,” Kolarik commented.
A public service announcement indicated that residents were being cautioned about an “active police investigation involving residents,” assuring them there was “no immediate threat or danger.” The announcement noted that law enforcement might continue to be present in the area as the investigation unfolds.
McKee was taken to a court in Rockford, Illinois, where he waived his right to extradition. His attorney stated that he intends to plead not guilty upon returning to Ohio. He faces charges of premeditated aggravated murder linked to the deaths of the Tepe couple, with further charges expected in Ohio.
