Trump Advocates for U.S. Control of Greenland

On Wednesday, President Trump declared that the United States “needs” to take control of Greenland to bolster national security. He expressed concern that any other solution “will not be acceptable” as he prepared for crucial discussions with Danish and Greenlandic leaders.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked, “NATO should lead the way for us to get it.” He emphasized that if the U.S. doesn’t secure Greenland, it risks having Russia or China step in, which he firmly opposes.

The President highlighted the military implications of U.S. control, noting that without the substantial power the U.S. brings, NATO’s effectiveness would diminish significantly. He believes that Greenland under American control would make NATO more potent and capable.

These comments came right before Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were set to meet with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt. The talks aim to ease tensions regarding the White House’s push for the U.S. to annex Greenland, a territory that has long been governed by Denmark.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated at a press conference that, if given the choice, the island would side with Denmark over the U.S., expressing a preference for NATO and the European Union instead. His office later underscored that Greenland would reject any notion of U.S. occupation, urging for NATO’s protection against potential threats.

The United States already maintains a military presence on Greenland, and Denmark has indicated its willingness to allow U.S. forces to bolster defenses against threats from Russia and China.

Nielsen made it clear that Greenlanders do not wish to be owned, ruled, or be a part of the United States. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt recently highlighted that the use of military force is an option. Trump reiterated that actions would be taken in Greenland regardless of local sentiments.

In response to the Prime Minister’s comments, another White House press secretary, Anna Kelly, maintained that President Trump views Greenland as a key strategic location, crucial to national security. She added that he believes Greenlanders would benefit from U.S. protection against contemporary Arctic threats, emphasizing a commitment to fostering long-term peace both domestically and internationally.
