NASCAR Faces Heartbreak with Recent Tragedies
The NASCAR community has been struck by two tragic events just before the year changed, marked by the untimely deaths of Dennis Hamlin, the father of Greg Biffle, and current driver Denny Hamlin.
In early December, Biffle, his wife, and two children were among seven individuals who lost their lives when their plane went down near a North Carolina airport. Just under two weeks later, Denny Hamlin’s father succumbed to injuries sustained in a house fire, which also left his mother in the hospital.
The Daytona 500, set to kick off the 2026 NASCAR season next month, is certainly overshadowed by these events.
“You might say NASCAR is huge, yet it’s a tight-knit family,” remarked Ricky Stenhouse Jr., the 2023 Daytona 500 champion, in a recent chat. “The community is expansive, but everyone is closely interconnected, and whatever happens—everyone feels it deeply.
“It’s just heartbreaking for Greg and his family, truly tragic. Denny was really public about aiming for a championship to honor his father, never expecting the end would come so soon.” It’s haunting to think he could have succeeded this year, and just, well, it’s a crazy, devastating offseason now.”
“We’re all just eager to get back on track, though. Hopefully, things will calm down soon. It’s been hard for everyone. But there’s definitely been a strong sense of support in the community, especially for the families affected.”
Dennis Hamlin and Mary Lou Hamlin, both 69, were discovered outside their two-story home near Stanley, suffering from serious injuries. Later, Dennis passed away at the hospital, while his wife received burn treatment at a specialized facility in Winston-Salem.
Just before the incidents, Denny Hamlin spoke about his father’s sacrifices to help him achieve his NASCAR aspirations. He revealed to the Associated Press that his father had been gravely ill.
“Honestly, this is my final chance for him to witness this. I can’t let him miss such a moment,” Denny reflected about his father, who had been there for his championship win. Unfortunately, he fell short in the last race of the season.
To support his son’s dreams, Dennis Hamlin put tremendous financial strain on his family by taking out several mortgages and maxing out credit cards, nearly leading to financial disaster. Yet his efforts bore fruit, as Denny’s illustrious career includes 60 wins, three of which are Daytona 500 victories.
Greg Biffle, in contrast, collected 19 Cup Series wins, six of which came in a particularly strong 2005 season where he finished second overall. He also clinched the Craftsman Truck Series title in 2000 and the Xfinity Series championship in 2002.
Post-racing, Biffle utilized his flying skills for good, assisting Hurricane Helen victims in 2024 by delivering much-needed supplies.
