Randi Weingarten Exits X Citing Hate and Disinformation
Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, has decided to leave the platform X, expressing concerns over “hate” and “disinformation.” In a statement, she remarked that her experience on the site has turned from being a vibrant space for public dialogue into one rife with negative content.
She stated, “It’s time to let go of X/Twitter. The decline of this platform has been painful to witness.” Weingarten invited followers to connect with her and the AFT on other social media platforms, including Bluesky, Substack, Threads, Instagram, and Facebook.
Notably, Bluesky, which is viewed as more liberal, has attracted many users who used to be prominent on Twitter, now rebranded as X following Elon Musk’s acquisition.
Concerns Over Content and Safety
Weingarten confirmed to Reuters that neither her account nor the AFT’s account will be active on X anymore. She cited “disturbing” images that involved her children on social platforms as a trigger for her decision.
She expressed her dismay at the rise of extremist behavior on the site since Musk took over, saying it was already becoming problematic even when it was still Twitter. Adding to her concerns, Weingarten noted that the site has become increasingly dangerous, especially with the emergence of non-consensual images generated by an AI tool, Grok.
“The Grok AI image generator with no safeguards was the last straw,” she said. “Starting tomorrow, I won’t be using Twitter or X.” She emphasized that although it wasn’t an easy choice, it felt necessary. “If you are part of Team Humanity and believe in the protection of children, you have to draw this line,” Weingarten explained.
Reactions and Upcoming Changes
The American Federation of Teachers, which boasts around 1.8 million members, has actively criticized various political administrations. Recently, they released a statement urging immigration enforcement agencies like ICE to avoid schools, highlighting concerns about safety amidst rising tensions.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from the AFT, X, or Grok regarding Weingarten’s statements and actions. The topic of safety in educational environments continues to stir debate, especially in light of current incidents affecting schools and communities.
