Republican lawmakers are using social media to show support for anti-regime protesters in Iran. Recently, Sen. Tim Sheehy from Montana and Rep. Claudia Tenney from New York shared images of themselves lighting cigarettes and cigars with burning photos of Khamenei. They captioned their posts with the phrase, “When you get it, smoke it.”
This phenomenon echoes a growing trend where individuals across social media are using images of Khamenei in acts of defiance. As protests surge in Iran, it seems people everywhere are taking notice, with international leaders increasingly backing the Iranian populace.
The situation has escalated, as the government led by Ayatollah Khamenei has cracked down on demonstrations, even going so far as to cut internet access to stifle any reports of violence against protesters.
In response to the protests, exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi has publicly called on President Trump and the U.S. to assist those protesting the longstanding regime.
Sen. Sheehy explained his personal stake in these issues, pointing out that Iran engages in actions like torture and kidnapping that have affected Americans, including his friends. “The Iranian regime has been hostile for 46 years. They have threated lives through numerous actions. For me, this isn’t just political; it’s personal. It’s time to deal with this,” Sheehy remarked in an email to a news outlet.
He also offered encouragement to Iranians, stating, “Dear Iranian people, your bravery inspires us. We stand with your fight against this oppressive regime.”
Rep. Tenney’s office echoed this sentiment, applauding the bravery of those in Iran who are challenging decades of oppression. Their spokesperson described the courage of Iranian men and women as “extraordinary” in light of the severe repression they face.
Tenney’s office emphasized her commitment to the cause, acknowledging that now, with Trump in the White House, the Iranian people have a vital ally. Trump has been clear about his support for the protests and has warned that the U.S. is prepared to intervene if the regime resorts to violence.
In a recent letter, Trump stated, “Iran is striving for freedom more than ever before. America is ready to help!!!”
