Mayor Mamdani Defends Sanctuary City Status Amid Federal Funding Threats
Mayor Zoran Mamdani reaffirmed New York City’s commitment to its “sanctuary city” designation following President Trump’s announcement to cut federal funding over such policies. His response was clear: “Our values and laws are not bargaining chips.” He expressed this sentiment in a message on social media, emphasizing his dedication to safeguarding the city and its inhabitants, regardless of federal threats.
On Tuesday, President Trump declared he would freeze federal funds to sanctuary cities, including New York City and state, starting February 1, claiming this measure was necessary to “protect criminals.”
Sanctuary cities generally prioritize immigrant rights and limit collaboration with federal immigration authorities, which threatens President Trump’s ongoing initiative to apprehend and deport those living in the U.S. without legal status.
Interestingly, amidst this tension, it’s reported that Mamdani maintains a friendly relationship with Trump, communicating via text about twice a week. He mentioned reaching out to the president to voice his opposition to the funding freeze and to clarify his stance on the issue.
“I haven’t heard back from the president yet, but this is my position as mayor of New York,” he said. However, it seems Trump has yet to respond, as Mamdani noted the lack of communication during a press conference held at a school in Brooklyn.
This ongoing standoff is intriguing, especially given the somewhat unlikely camaraderie formed between the democratic socialist mayor and the Republican president during a previously amicable meeting at the White House.
In response to the possibility of losing federal funding, Mamdani expressed confidence in the city’s resilience. “There are many threats posed against New York City on a regular basis, and I believe in our ability to counter these challenges,” he stated, highlighting past successes in overcoming adversity.
