G7 cautions Iran about new sanctions amid continuing crackdown on protests

Report: Over 2,500 Fatalities in Iranian Protests

According to recent reports, over 2,500 people have died during the ongoing protests in Iran. This situation has drawn attention, with President Donald Trump indicating potential actions if the unrest continues to escalate.

On Wednesday, the Group of Seven (G7) countries issued a warning that they were ready to enforce further sanctions against Iran if the regime persists in its violent crackdown on demonstrators.

The foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the high representative of the European Union, expressed “grave concern” over the reported mass casualties and human rights abuses resulting from the protests.

The Human Rights Activist News Agency reported that at least 2,403 protesters have died, while other sources suggest the number could exceed 3,000, indicating that the true toll might be considerably higher.

In their joint statement, the G7 foreign ministers expressed deep concern over the situation in Iran. They condemned the Iranian authorities’ harsh repression against the citizens who have bravely voiced their demands for a better life, dignity, and freedom since December 2025.

The G7 also voiced alarm over the reports of deaths and injuries, criticizing the systematic violence against demonstrators and the intimidation tactics leveraged by security forces.

The protests, which began on December 28, were sparked by worsening economic conditions and the collapse of the Iranian rial. Initially focused on economic issues, they quickly transformed into widespread anti-government demonstrations.

The G7 urged Iranian authorities to show restraint, cease violence against civilians, and comply with international human rights obligations. They called for the protection of rights related to freedom of expression, information, and peaceful assembly without fear of retaliation.

While the statement did not outline specific new sanctions, it made it clear that additional measures are under consideration, reflecting unity among major Western nations. The G7 ministers warned that Iran’s ongoing violations of international human rights could lead to further restrictive measures.
