Iran restricts airspace with NOTAM as regional tensions increase

Iran Closes Airspace, Tensions Rise Amid Protests

On Wednesday, Iran issued a Notification to Airmen (NOTAM), announcing a temporary airspace closure. This impacts all flights, except those with prior approval for international journeys. The NOTAM will remain in effect for a little over two hours.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 indicated that several aircraft faced refusals to enter Iranian airspace, with others being rerouted.

Shortly after, the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO) cautioned against “all but essential travel to Israel,” mentioning that “the risk of escalating tensions in the region is increasing.” They noted that this escalation could lead to travel disruptions and unexpected outcomes.

It seems internet access remains restricted amidst ongoing protests, although some Iranians are still able to make international calls.

US officials, citing rising tensions, informed Reuters that the Army Department made changes to personnel on Wednesday. One military official suggested that indications of a potential US attack are present, describing it as part of a strategy to keep everyone on alert—a rather unpredictable move.

Before the NOTAM was announced, President Donald Trump commented in the Oval Office that reports suggested the violence against protesters in Iran was ceasing. “We’re hearing that the killings are stopping in Iran. And they continue to stop, but there are no executions or plans for executions,” he stated, expressing hope based on what he described as reliable sources.

When asked if military action might be on the table, Trump indicated they would monitor the situation closely. He mentioned receiving valuable insights from some knowledgeable individuals regarding the unfolding events.

Amid these developments, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime has faced criticism due to allegations that over 3,000 individuals have died during protests related to economic hardship and political repression.

In response, Trump declared on Tuesday that he would halt all meetings with Iranian officials until the violence ends.
