Backlash for Michigan Sandwich Shop Owner’s Rant Against ICE
The co-owner of a sandwich shop in Michigan, Brett Gilbert, has expressed that he isn’t worried about the backlash he faces following a profane outburst directed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His remarks gained significant attention after being posted on the official Facebook page of Fatty Lumpkin’s Sandwich Shack in Muskegon.
In his post, Gilbert strongly criticized ICE, stating, “Your blatant fascism is bullshit. You are not welcome at Fatty Lumpkins Sandwich Shack.” He further stated that they would be denied service if they approached without a warrant and warned, “If we see anything resembling your presence on private property, we will call 911 immediately.”
The tirade included an assortment of profanity, highlighting his frustration over issues such as due process, constitutional rights, and what he perceives as a lack of humanity stemming from arbitrary borders. He emphasized that anyone supporting ICE should not expect to enjoy the food or atmosphere of his establishment, asserting, “We are not you and you are not us. Stay away!!!”
Despite the storm of criticism, Gilbert noted that customer support has surged, leading to a tripling of business. He remarked, “A lot of people are discussing the wording in the post, but I don’t really care about it. It’s not that big of a deal. Those are words.” He believes the immediate actions and policies in play are far more crucial than his choice of words.
Gilbert acknowledged that his post might deter some customers, but he seems unfazed. “Sometimes you just have to not worry about it,” he added. “It’s not all about the money. At the end of the day, I know I’m going to take care of myself and the people I love, and this is part of that.”
Interestingly, there was also a case in Washington, D.C., where a man allegedly used a sandwich as a weapon against National Guard troops; however, the grand jury dismissed the case.
