Brawl Erupts at Staten Island Youth Basketball Game
A recent incident at a youth basketball game in Staten Island has drawn attention after a video surfaced showing a chaotic fight among parents during the event.
The confrontation took place on December 20 at St. Teresa’s, where Year 6 boys from St. Teresa’s faced off against St. Clare’s School. The game was organized under the supervision of the Catholic Youth Organization, part of the local diocese.
The footage reveals a heated argument between two mothers that rapidly spiraled into violence. At one point, a man pushed another, igniting a flurry of punches. Spectators, including other parents and school staff, rushed in to intervene, but the two women continued to engage in a hair-pulling and punching match.
After a number of men managed to separate them, the chaos re-escalated as the women resumed their brawl amidst the turmoil.
CYO County Commissioner Michael Neely reported that the women were indeed parents involved in the skirmish, alongside their families. As a consequence, both women and their families have been suspended indefinitely from participating in CYO events.
Neely noted, “Two families were involved, and ultimately their families were banned from CYO indefinitely.” Previously, such altercations may have been addressed individually, but in response to this incident, new regulations aimed at curbing spectator misconduct were announced by officials, including Staten Island Borough President Vito Fosella.
As part of the new guidelines, anyone ejected from a CYO basketball game for disruptive actions will face a one-year suspension.
Fosella, a parent himself, emphasized that the focus should be on the kids and ensuring a positive experience for them, expressing concern about disruptive behaviors overshadowing the main purpose of these events.
